STUDENT ACTIVITIES - 23-24 February 10 : Final Drama "A Tale To Remember"

As part of the TLD092: Language & Drama course requirements, the ASASI TESL Part 2 students (the Asasians) are required to organize a showcase of Final Drama Performances which constitute 50% of their on-going assessment. The main objectives of this showcase are to demonstrate both language and drama skills through script writing and drama production and to evaluate the various impact of language in drama in the ESL context/education.

Bearing the theme of ‘A Tale to Remember’, the Asasians staged their drama showcase on the 23 & 24 February 2010 at the Intec Great Hall, UiTM Kampus Seksyen 17, Shah Alam. An assemble of 8 plays staged by eight groups from four different classes had been successfully presented before the very supportive and sporting crowd that consisted of lecturers, parents, fellow students from Faculty of Education and INTEC as well as the public.

The theme of the Asasians’ showcase this semester was special as it was meant to appreciate local folktales. Hence we had amazing performances on the following titles: “Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup”, “Tun Teja”, “Ledang”, “Mahsuri Conspiracy”, “Todak”, “Ulik Mayang”, “Princess Hang Li Po”, and “Huminodun”. These very own students’ stage productions had proven successful as all cast and crew involved contributed actively to ensure the smooth-running of the final drama performances.

The students conducted their own welcoming event for their coursemates. It was warm and cheerful for both parties.

A production conducted by the joined hands of different faculties was both inspiring and exciting. A handful of the Asasi students pledged themselves as crews and gained crucial experience in staging a musical.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES - 9 December 09 : Natrah The Musical

Though the staging was themed in both the Malay culture and language, students were proven to be awe-struck and inspired by the powerful characters played by Maya Karin, Sofia Jane, Remy Ishak and Umie Aida.

It was also the evening where most students were dressed to kill too!!!

ASASI TESL PROGRAMME
Asasi TESL is a full-time preparatory programme that prepares students for entry into B. Ed. (Hons.) TESL programme or other relevant degree programmes at UiTM or other local Public Institutions of Higher Learning (IPTA).
This programme has just started in July 2007. However, it has its root in UiTM’s Pre-TESL programme, a 2-year course to prepare students for UiTM’s Bachelor of Education (Hons.) in TESL programme.
The main distinction between Asasi TESL and its predecessor is now it has grown into a programme that prepares students for other suitable degree programmes instead of only B. Ed (Hons.). TESL programmes in UiTM or other IPTAs in Malaysia. The figure below depicts the path students take in this programme.
The duration of the programme is 2 semesters with 41 credits, where students will undergo an extensive English Language proficiency courses as well as basic introductory courses to English Literature, Drama, Computer Literacy, Malaysian Studies and Principles of Education.
Upon completion of this program, students could proceed to study B. Ed. (Hons) TESL programmes or other relevant degree programmes at any IPTA.
PROGRAM
OUTCOMES
In line with outcome based education, the programme aims to produce students who are able to:
acquire and apply knowledge on basic principles of education, Malaysian history and Education Policies;
acquire and apply fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and use of English to pursue related degree programmes;
analyze and experiment with language and literature elements;
communicate ideas effectively and creatively in formal and informal contexts;
interact effectively and work collaboratively within and beyong academic contexts;
develop values and ethics for future undergraduates programmes;
apply knowledge and skills of Information Communication Technology (ICT);
plan and organize projects that involve managerial and entrepreneurial skills;
demonstrate leadership skills through various classroom, group and field work activities.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR ASASI TESL PROGRAMME
Candidates who wish to enter this programme must fulfill university requirement and possess the minimum qualifications as follows:
· General Entry Requirements:
An excellent result in SPM or its equivalent, recognized by the Malaysian Government with a minimum of 5 credit B+, B, C+, C grades including Bahasa Malaysia;
· Specific Entry Requirements:
Candidates must fulfill the General University Requirements with:
Distinction (minimum A2/A-) in English AND a credit in Mathematics or Additional Mathematics.
· Candidates must pass a written test AND interview
· Application is only for current year SPM leavers.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Successful candidates will receive financial assistance from Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia as follows:
1. Allowance : RM1,250.00 per semester
2. Fees : RM350.00 per semester
3. Hostel : RM360.00 per semester
4. Airfare* : Return air ticket (once only)*
*(ONLY for students residing in Sabah and Sarawak)

PROSPECTS
Upon the completion of the program, students could:
advance their study to B. Ed. (Hons) TESL programmes or other relevant degree programmes at any IPTA.
THE REQUIREMENTS FOR B. ED. (HONS) TESL @ UITM:
Minimum of 2.50 CGPA
A minimum of Band 4 in MUET
Pass the MEdSI (Malaysian Educators Selection Inventory) written test
Pass the Ministry of Higher Education selection interview
